SR250 Construction

This culmination of work has resulted in the design and construction of the SR250, a full-scale 250kW prototype. This is a pre-commercial full-scale prototype device, designed to demonstrate the technology at a large scale of deployment, which was constructed at Harland and Wolff in Belfast in December 2010. The device was installed at EMEC on 31st March 2011.  This project will involve extensive testing in a controlled and staged manner starting in April 2011 and finishing in October 2012.  The 250kW prototype is considered a prudent intermediate step in a sheltered lower tidal speed site at EMEC prior to embarking on a 2MW device as part of a single demonstrator farm, and ultimately a 10MW commercial array deployment.  The results, and perhaps more importantly the experiences gained from practical operations associated with the SR250 testing, will prove invaluable in the development of procedures for the construction, design and testing of the proposed 2MW prototype and subsequent devices.
